Holyoke Planning from the Enduro Chair
You're probably not surprised to know that the Holyoke Enduro is coming up (it's the 38th Annual this year!). The surprising thing is how fast it is coming. Trailwork wise, we really only have 3 more weekends in July to get everything done. Roy and Ron have already been in their sections working on new trail. I have been up making minor improvements and clearing deadfall in Greg and Ron's sections (I went through three tanks of chainsaw gas last Sunday!).
The good news is that it has been pretty dry up in the Nemadji which means that, if the weather holds, that we'll run nearly as much trail as we did last year. It also means that we'll have more fun riding in July. We definitely lost some mileage due to the Potlatch lease situation so we are down about 3 of miles there. Not sure how much we'll get back with Roy's new trail and Ron's reroutes.
Due to the time crunch and because of the DNR work schedule, we will NOT be installing that bridge over the State Line Creek this year. I had a chat with the DNR yesterday and Joe said that they are just too busy in the St Croix State Forest to get much of anything done in the Nemadji. I have been fooling around designing the Bridge. It should be pretty sweet when we finally get it done. Probably next spring.
Please start planning for the Enduro soon. Don't forget that we will need a good supply of Check Workers on Enduro day. 10 Checks x 4 people per check means 40 people. Plus we'll need road guards for both Hiway 23 crossings. Plus we'll need 2 people for the Start. Plus we'll need people to pull Score Cards. Plus we'll need people to do scoring. Plus we'll need people to do sweep riding. Plus we'll need people to pull down arrows. You get the point.
Remember that working a Check can be done by anyone. Most Checks are a short walk from a parked car (maybe two check require a bike or ATV for access). We'll make sure that there are enough experienced people to go around so that inexperienced people can fit right in. I encourage you to bring any of your friends and/or family to come and help out. We'll have a Check Meeting at 8:00 pm on Saturday night in the Holyoke Town Hall. All potential Check Crew people must be there to be counted.
We pretty much take over the campground behind the Town Hall so we'll all be parking and camping there on event weekend. We do plan on having a Club supper this year on Saturday night. We are working to set up a local organization to have a hot breakfast served on Sunday morning as well. If the local breakfast falls through, we'll set up a breakfast of our own.
The Section Leaders for this year are, in Enduro route order:
Ron Palm - 763-557-0210
Gene Perry - 612-865-6430
Greg Nelson - 612-827-3412
Roy Fleming - 763-241-9301
John Otto - 952-445-2942
Tim Kight (MINI) - 651-245-5993
Ken Fastner (overall) - 952-402-3696
Several of these guys will be going up every weekend. All of them have stuff to get done. If you want to help, please give one of these guys (or me) a call or an email and set something up to come up and help.
Here is what the upcoming weekends look like as far as work schedule:
July 8, 9 Work Weekend
July 14, 15 Work Weekend
July 22, 23 Mileaging Weekend
July 29, 30 Arrowing Weekend
Aug 4th (Friday) Finish Arrowing and final touch up
Aug 5th (Saturday) MINI at 3:00 pm
Aug 6th (Sunday) Enduro at 9:00 am
See Ya In the Woods,
Trail Terrapin, Ken
As most of you may know by now, one of our club members, Dave Kott, was badly injured at the Arlansaw Hare Scrambles held in mid-May. He suffered a broken neck and will be paralyzed what sounds like permanently (I really hope I’m misinformed on that part). Mike Murphy had this update:
I spoke with Brett Grossman, Dave's close buddy. He said Dave is doing better every time he goes to see him and he has a positive attitude. Brett said Dave will be going to the Courage center in late July or early August he will be there for 6 months. He also said there are a number of fund raisers in the works. And next week they will have a website set-up for Dave with all the info, and Steve Danelius will have it posted on the ARMCA site. It sounds like Dave will need a elevator in his house, estimated cost $20,000
Events planed:
- Paddle boat dinner cruise Aug. 22 $20.00 per person
- Silent auction in Fairbault
- Cambridge H/S concessions & gate fee will donated
Brett said to call him if you need any more info. Cell is 612-275-8620
None this month.
Club Meeting Minutes, for June 28, 2006
Attendance
Club Members – Bob Chase, Ken Fastner, Scott Haraldson, Nathan Huskamp, Jeff Mack, Billy May, Mike Murphy, Greg Nelson, Ron, Palm, Gene Perry, Jeff Terrio, Ron Wilhelm, Justin Wilhelm
· We voted on changing Megan Rhode’s status from probationary to vested. No one had seen her for quite a while and the vote was negative. She will return to a non-member status and would have to go through the process to become probationary again.
· Voted in as Probationary Members – Ron Wilhelm, and Justin Wilhelm. Welcome to the club. Jacob Wilhelm was also present, but is under 18, so cannot be voted on for club membership.
· Grantsburg Projects / Issues
o Fence – The fence was going pretty well until a line was hit digging one of the holes. The utility lines were marked, but this particular one was off by several feet.
o New Shed – We still need some information from Tim Kight to figure out what he would need from the club to take up and down the “State Fair demo” shed, mostly how many people are needed and at what date / times.
o Eliminating the Vendor Fee was discussed. Since selling at the races is not the cash cow it once was, it needs to be re-evaluated. It will be discussed further and voted on next meeting.
o It was brought up that most tracks don’t have riders pick pins for the second moto staging position, but go by how they finished in the first race. If Tom Peterson is present, this will discussed further at the next meeting.
· Stone Lake Recap
o Club turnout was not very good. Could have used more people.
o Most thought the number of checks was a bit excessive for the mileage.
o There were problems with people getting lost before the second check and were complaints about the arrowing of the first half (MOTR). It was agreed that we may need to work with MOTR a bit closer next year or at the least, pre-ride their section (bringing arrows) shortly before the event.
· Holyoke – There was some planning for Holyoke, most of which is covered in the note from the Woods Grand Poobah printed earlier in this newsletter except: Trophies will be plaques again. We’ll use the “Club Arrows”. The club ATV trailer was still up at Holyoke and needs to be retrieved. Check bags need to be serviced.
· Budget Committee – Not much changed since last meeting. One member was in the hospital for a while and the others were busy with all our events. The fist step is to set up tracking and categorizing of expenses and revenues so that we have enough information to analyze. One assignment for the meeting was to try to compare the income / expenses of the quad race vs a bike/quad race.
· Mike Murphy brought up Dave Kott’s injury. The members present agreed that the club should do something significant to help him out. See the section earlier in the newsletter for more information.
Quad Race Wrap-Up from the MX Chair
I’d like to thank everyone that helped out with the quad race this past weekend. From the sounds of it, we did an excellent job running the race and most everyone had a great time. The only negative thing I’ve seen on the message boards was the lack of grading after the first set of motos but we usually only do that to the parking lot anyway. Other than that all the other comments were positive, when we were gathering up the trash we got lots of "thank you" and "great job" type comments.
We rode the track after the race and I have to say the corners were the roughest I’ve ever seen them and the whoops were really deep. We made the decision to have John grade the track so it will be fun to ride for the rest of the summer, he only charged us an extra $xxxxx to groom the track after the race.
If someone wants to figure out what parts the Foreman needs I can get them ordered, I can get the parts for cost.
Thanks again for everyone’s hard work,
Tom Peterson
Post Meeting addendum – Most of the people present at the meeting who were working at the event thought that
seemed like less work than a regular moto, mostly because the micro-track was not
being used and there were fewer races.
Probationary Members to be voted on:
June – Taylor Currie, Casey Weist, Doug Less
