Club Meeting Minutes, for February 22, 2006
Attendance – 18
Club Members - Bob Chase , John DeLuce, Ken Fastner, Charlie Forrest, Scott Haraldson, Jeff Klien, Mark Krey, Greg Nelson, John Otto, Gene Perry, Tom Peterson, Ross Thompson, Mike Wells
Prospective – Ron Wilhelm, Jacob Wilhelm, Justin Wilhelm, Charlie’s Friend
· Property Purchase – [Section edited for Website].
· GIA – Got the check. It included everything that we asked for.
· Stone Lake – The trails will be reversed. May need to reroute some of the hills in our half. Would like to add a few miles, but nothing like last year’s undertaking. June 18th is the day of the enduro, so this work needs to be done prior to that.
· Holyoke – Will need the usual spring clean-up. The potlatch land is leased, but we may able to work out deals with some of the lessees. Ken is looking into getting Polaris to help pay for The State Line Creek Crossing Bridge.
· Enduro of the Year – Stone Lake won Enduro of the Year! Prior to this, we had discussed replacing the EOY trophy, similar to what the Noresman did with the HS of the Year trophy. It was agreed that we would still do that. Greg Nelson, the trophy guy, will look into options.
· Grantsburg Motocross
o Flagging – Tom has it set-up for both the races and practices.
o Grading – Tom has several bids, trying to find someone as local as possible, because of the high cost of transporting the equipment.
o Water System – Improvements were done last fall. Tom thinks we could use a tank near the starting line since that pump is so slow.
o Track Changes – Much is clean-up, such as getting rid of the exposed roots/trees between the first turn and the parking lot section. The only re-routing discussed was to the area right after the parking lot section, the tight right, narrow left, narrow right, still turning left when hitting the first tabletop section. The idea is to turn that into a sweeping 90 right then sweeping 90 left (well before first tabletop). That is close to the property line so we’ll need to take that into account when making these changes.
o Sound Testing – The district did not come to any conclusion at their last board meeting and neither did we. We want to post that bikes are subject to random sound testing, but did not decide on the mechanism for picking bikes or how and when the testing would take place. See post-meeting update elsewhere in the newsletter.
o Mini Quads – The bigger class will run on the big track with the 65cc cut-offs.
o KTM Demo Day – Scott Haraldson has been in contact with KTM to arrange a demo day at one of our organized practices. We decided to ask for 4/22, the day before our premier event.
o Season Pass – One Season Pass for our events was auctioned at a fund raiser recently. This entitles the holder to a free practice and one free entry fee per race weekend. Bryce Bernloher is the holder of this pass. Since it has the complete schedule on them, we will use these as flyers for our events. Charlie F and Scott H volunteered to get them into a few shops.
o Club Dinner – There was talk of having a dinner served at the track Saturdays, since going into town makes everyone disappear at a time when watering often needs to be done. No resolution made.
o The Fence – Once the frost is out, fence work will continue. Should be done early spring?
o Our Signs – With stencils hand, Mark Krey is ready to make the signs for the race that are seen at the entrance.
o Other Signs – We were asked how much we would want to put up a 4x8 sign at the start area. We thought $xxx was about right. Someone needs to manage this.
o Leo’s Poster – As decided last year, we will not pay to be included in the Leo’s poster this year.
o Riding School – Ken F is in contact with a Dutch rider who is looking at moving to Minnesota and teaching sand-riding schools. He is looking for some arrangement where he would lease our track.
Grantsburg Status Report
I’d just like to give everyone an update on the action items I had from last meeting. Let me know if you think I’m missing anything.
· Numbers – I ordered 12 each of the following:
o Numbers 0 – 9 Black six inch
o Numbers 0 – 9 White six inch
o I paid $xxxxx/pack, I think we should sell them for $xxxxx/ pack, these are the cheap ZeroNine numbers that Bob’s sells for $xxxxx/pack.
· Muffler Packing from Race Tools - http://www.racetools.com/
o I with talked with Morgan Curtice from Race Tools yesterday. We talked a lot about sound issues and what they've done for other tracks. They are talking about putting together a package for us which will include about 50 bags of packing for us to sell and KEEP the proceeds, some Race Tool banners to display, stickers and sound education fliers to hand out. They are going to give this to us free of charge, if we sell all of the packing we can make $xxxxx. In exchange they want us to display their banners and use their stuff. I’ll know for sure by the end of next week what they are going to do.
· Grading – We have estimates from Rob Murphy and John Collins. I’d like to give John a shot. Estimates below.
o John Collins - 1st race grading: will bring dozer, ASV with several attachments, and a backhoe to move the parking lot jump into and bank the corner. Will do the other changes you wanted too. Will grade Friday and Saturday after practice and leave equipment and stay with it on Sunday. $xxxxx (increased price for track changes). 2nd & 3rd races: dozer & ASV, Friday and Saturday track prep, stay at race on Sunday, $xxxxx each race. Total for all three $xxxxx. John mentioned he really wants to do our grooming, not only this spring, but on a long term basis. If we and the other two race @$xxxxx/race we’re looking at $xxxxx.
o Rob Murphy - This would be the break down for the year: Before the first practice on April 1st $xxxxx between practice and the race $xxxxx. Before the 2nd practice on April 8th $xxxxx between practice and the race $xxxxx. Before the 3rd practice on April 22nd $xxxxx between practice and the race $xxxxx. After the last race in April I would grade for $xxxxx. Before quads on June 11th and after $xxxxx. Before Sept. 23rd $xxxxx between practice and race $xxxxx and after the race $xxxxx. I dropped the price from $xxxxx a time to $xxxxx due to the amount, also with the fuel savings due to having them the same weekend, even when the fuel prices have gone up. This price includes fuel, operator, getting the equipment to and from, and the quality track prep that is the same as we are used to. If you can find it less expensive keep all those things in mind. It boils down to $xxxxx more than last year to run the practice. I feel that the track needs to be graded after the races that will have a fair amount of time between races for the sake of the members to ride. Any questions call me or e-mail me back. Sorry I didn't get this sooner I was getting prices still. I would have to know pretty soon to reserve the machine just to make sure it is available for those dates. Total for the year $xxxxx.
o Tim Kight – Tim is going to do the grooming for the mini track and help with race day track maintenance, we need to cover his fuel cost and flip him a fifty or two.
· Wrist Bands – I think we’re covered on these, both Roy and I ordered them last year. Roy let me know if we need more.
· Flaggers – The flaggers are covered, we have the Grantsburg Hockey Association for the first two race weekends, they are also flagging for practice on Saturday, $xxxxx/weekend and the quad race in June for $xxxxx. The Savage Snowmobile Club will be flagging for our last race in April and the September race for $xxxxx/weekend if they flag practice otherwise its $xxxxx, they might not be able to flag for September practice date.
· Medics – Linda Taylor has been contacted and is prepared for all of our practice and race dates.
· Food – Spatz has the schedule, I told him he might want to be open on practice days too.
· Leo’s Poster – We will not be advertising on the Leo’s poster, I called Dave Carlson to make sure we are not charged.
· Advertising Flyers – I should have those done this week and will get them to Scott, Charlie and anyone else that has places to distribute them.
Tom Peterson, SAER MX Chairman
District 23 Sound Testing Policy for 2006.
Starting with the first race of 2006, all of the motocross races in District 23 will be doing sound testing. The procedure will involve class reps working in conjunction with the event referee to choose at least 10 bikes per race for testing. They will be initially be choosing those bikes that sound the loudest or they may choose randomly. Any rider with a machine that fails that test will be given the opportunity to fix his bike before his first race. Any bike that doesn't meet the sound requirements will not be allowed to compete. If a bike is tested post-race and found to be too loud, (i.e., putting the loud exhaust back on for the race), the racer will be disqualified.
The tracks will also continue to offer voluntary testing at the Saturday practice sessions. We are in the process of informing our track vendors of this process so that they can stock the necessary parts for mufflers. Make sure that your packing is up to par and if you use an aftermarket exhaust, be sure it meets the 99 decibel limit. We would suggest that you carry your stock muffler and fresh packing with you, should you be found to be too loud.
